School Dog

School Dog- Meet Nellie the Labradoodle!

Nellie belongs to Mr Neville and his family. Having her as a school dog at Stillness Infant School enables Mr Neville to combine the responsibility of owning a dog with running a classroom as well as enriching the lives of the children and staff.

Nellie has a special area in the upstairs offices where she is cared for by Mrs Grimes and Mrs Buckoke. She enjoys a good old snooze in her bed when she is not working with the children.

Getting used to the noises and smells in a busy school has enabled Nellie to settle in and now she is beginning to interact with the children, spending time in their classrooms and interacting safely and sensibly with the children. Soon, we will have a dog walking club where children will be able to accompany Nellie and her handler on a lunchtime walk.

Nellie has to have special insurance to be in our school and there are very clear rules about how the humans in school need to interact with her. These are written down in our School Dog Guidelines and Risk Assessment.

We are looking forward to learning more about how to care for Nellie in some workshops run by The Dog’s Trust.
